How ‘China’s story is told well’ in digital media

Abstract

In the early 2000s, the Chinese government launched a global propaganda campaign on the issue of national security, seeking to change the perception of their country by foreigners. Billions of dollars are being spent on newscasts, in-depth reports, and commentary programs, as well as feature presentations, focusing on the Chinese people and the English-speaking international audience. With this assertive communication strategy, China is trying to reshape the global information environment with massive infusions of money. The China Daily newspaper is one of these examples, which conveys information about China with the widest print and online circulation of any English-language newspaper in and outside China. This study aims to show how the plans outlined by Xi Jinping in his New Year’s speech started in the first month of 2020. The security issues he then quoted include: (1) societal security, which aims at eliminating poverty and building a moderately prosperous society; (2) political security, establishing diplomatic relations with over 180 countries; (3) geopolitical security, joining hands with all countries in the world to jointly build the Belt and Road; (4) economic security by establishing the Free Trade Zones, lowering taxes and the costs for medicine, cheaper and faster internet connections, and finally, (5) military security where reforming the national defense and military systems are of high priority. To have a broader view of these security issues, the online China Daily articles were read from the beginning of this year, and the results are presented in this paper.
